Wilderness Community Church is a United Methodist Fellowship that was formed in 1998 and rapidly outgrew its facilities at the Chancellor Outpost and then Brock Road Elementary School. The new church purchased a parcel of land along Route 3 in Spotsylvania to provide a location for its permanent home.
Welford Engineering Associates assisted it with long range planning for their campus and was retained to complete the design for the first phase. As the Site/Civil Engineering and Land Survey consultant for this project, it was our responsibility to assist the church with crafting a vision for their campus and translating that vision into an overall master plan. Our team worked closely with the church leadership, the site development team, and the other professionals retained by the church to advance the overall objectives of this project. When completed, this campus is permitted for 42,000 sf of church buildings and uses.
The planning and design engineering services Welford Engineering provided included: field survey, constraints analysis and conceptual site master planning including building sizes and locations, grading, storm water management, access and parking requirements, and project phasing. Welford Engineering also helped the church secure the required Special Use Permit and obtained Site Plan approval from Spotsylvania County. Following initial church and county approvals, Welford Engineering prepared final design and construction documents, as well as designed improvements to Route 3 for improved access. The successful project culminated with the opening of a 17,000 sf Phase I building in 2003.
